What are some of the obstacles which hold you back from achieving personal growth?
Do you feel guilty or ashamed for pursuing your goals and dreams?
Just as a boss or CEO directs a company’s operations, we too can take control and become CEO of our own lives.
In saying that, it’s not always easy, and several barriers can hinder our progress and stop us from reaching our full potential. This has been my story since I had Ivana and Jane in 2008. Unfortunately, when the diagnosis and medical challenges unfolded, I lost myself. I convinced myself that as a mum to twin girls on the autistic spectrum, I could have no other life except playing my caregiving role. As a result, I often felt guilty about going out for the occasional lunches or dinner dates or simply taking time out for myself.
I love my children wholeheartedly and dedicate myself to providing the best care and support possible. However, as time passed, I was burnt out and realised I had neglected my needs and desires.
Not so long ago, I realised that I needed to make a change and permit myself not just to live but to live my best life. I had to find a way to balance my career, business, and family commitments. As the saying goes, “You cannot pour from an empty cup.” So, I started to educate myself on how to care for my Angels and, most importantly, ask for help and care for myself.
I started to do this by taking small steps daily. This could mean having time to read a book or rest after an exhausting day. I also contacted friends and family for support, realising I could not do everything alone. As I began prioritising my needs, I noticed a change in myself. I felt more energised, more confident and more fulfilled. I stayed focused and started to work towards my dreams and goals. I have promised to prioritise self-care and well-being and never feel guilty or apologetic.
One day, I decided to focus on completing the book I had been writing for ten years. But every life has a story, and I have mine to share. So I have also started this blog to share my journey and inspire other special mums to care for themselves and pursue their passions.
The journey has been challenging; sometimes, I feel exhausted and overwhelmed. However, I now realise that permitting myself to live, set and pursue my goals is the greatest gift I could ever give myself.
Life can be unpredictable, and sometimes it can feel like we’re not living up to our full potential. Perhaps you’re stuck in a job you don’t enjoy or feel unfulfilled in your relationships. Whatever the case, permitting yourself to live your best life is essential. Loving and living your best life can mean different things to different people.
First and foremost, it’s essential to realise that you control your life. You have the power to make choices and take action that can lead to a more fulfilling life. However, sometimes we can get bogged down by self-doubt, fear, or societal expectations. It’s time to break free from these limiting beliefs and permit yourself to pursue your dreams and live your best life.
Common Barriers Preventing us from Becoming CEO of our Lives
Self-Doubt and Fear
One of the main obstacles which can hold us back from living our best lives is self-doubt and fear. We underestimate our true potential and abilities, second-guess our decisions and worry about what others would think about us if we fail. The key to overcoming this lie is cultivating self-belief and adopting a growth mindset. You can start to do this by identifying what your strengths are, setting realistic goals and taking action consistently.
Lack of Self-Confidence
Low self-esteem can severely impact your journey towards becoming the CEO of your life. When you doubt your abilities and constantly compare yourself to others, making bold decisions and taking risks becomes difficult. Boost your self-confidence by having a can-do attitude and acknowledging your strengths.
Lack of Clarity and Vision
Taking charge of your life is only possible with a clear roadmap. To overcome this barrier, you must take the time to reflect on your long-term aspirations. Then, you must define your personal mission statement and set specific goals which align with your vision.
Procrastination and Lack of Discipline
This is a big one for me as procrastination is an obstacle, especially when battling life’s issues. Procrastination and lack of discipline can be significant obstacles to personal success. To combat this, develop practical time management skills and establish daily routines by prioritising tasks and creating to-do lists. In addition, I set deadlines for myself to help me stay motivated and organised.
Limited Mindset and Resistance to Change
A fixed mindset is a barrier to personal growth, and one often has a myopic view of the world. Try to embrace a growth mindset by being open to new opportunities and challenging yourself to step out of your comfort zone. See failure as an opportunity to grow and view setbacks as valuable lessons.
Lack of Support and Accountability
It would help if you created your tribe and your support system. Otherwise, the journey can be lonely and challenging. The company we keep plays a significant role in our growth journey. Having unhealthy and toxic relationships drains our energy levels, can instil self-doubt and hinder our progress at the same time. Surround yourself with people who will encourage and inspire you. Collaborate with others, share your goals and hold yourself accountable to stay committed to your personal growth.
Remember, we all have the power to shape our destinies and create a life which exceeds our wildest dreams. That power to become CEO of your life lies within you.
Step up, take charge today, shape your own success story and embrace the incredible journey ahead of you.
Until the next time,
Gee xx
